Adrenaline rush: A thrill-seeker in Breck
What kind of summer adventurer are you? Part 1 of 5
What a rush winter was! With multi-foot snow reports, new terrain opening on Peak 6 and so many epic days ripping your favorite chutes and bowls at Breck, it’s natural to long for just one more powder day.
Perk up! Longer, warmer days are here and Breck has your summertime equivalent for that heart-jumping-out-of-your-chest mountain adventure fix.
Here’s your summer thrills hit list:
Mountain bike
Gravity, two wheels and some of the state’s top singletrack come together for one of the most challenging and thrilling experiences around. Breck boasts 12 green, blue and black mountain-bike specific trails. Push yourself and pedal Dwight’s 2.4-mile trail of banked corners and berms or maneuver nine miles of steep, rocky territory on the Wagon Trail.
Zipline
Take a high-speed cable ride over Peak 8 on the new TenMile Flyer Zipline at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Harness in, put your feet up and out and fly 50 feet in the air at speeds of up to 45 mph.
Whitewater raft
That generous snowy winter we had is melting and feeding into area rivers as you read this. Now is the perfect time to get out on the water and experience high-adrenaline, big time rapids. Call on The Adventure Company for guided raft trips on nearby rivers. Call 970-453-5000 now to reserve your spot.
Gold Runner Alpine Coaster
It might look like a kiddie ride, but this mountain coaster packs some serious scream-worthy twists. Soar through the forest in a two-seater car along 2,500 feet of track and see if you can take on the hairpin turns without reaching for the handbrake.
Hike a 14′er
Check off that quintessential Colorado summer bucket list to-do and hike one of the state’s 53 celebrated 14,000-foot-plus peaks. TenMile Range gem and local favorite, Quandary Peak reaches 14,265 feet and rewards hikers with breathtaking snow-capped views.
Kayak the Blue
Join local boaters paddling the Breck Kayak Park. The stretch of the Blue River winds through town and serves up more than 15 features along 1,800 feet (one of the longest kayak parks in the state). Equipment rentals are available at local outfitters.
Off-road Segway
Not afraid to try something new? You’ll love scoping the gorgeous summer scenery while perched on two beefy off-road tires. Instructors show you how to handle your Segway, a self-balancing battery-powered vehicle, and then lead you on a nearly two-hour excursion up and around mountain trails as you learn about local history and wildlife.
Fourth of July races
For the competitive crew, Breck has no shortage of summer racing events. Kick off your July 4 holiday right and sign up for the Independence Day 10K Trail Run. Or join the intense Firecracker 50 Mountain Bike Race and take on 50 miles of stunning trails in and around Breckenridge. – Lisa Pogue
