Top 10 summer events in Breck
Escape the heat and head for the hills to enjoy what I know are the top 10 summer events in Breck. I asked Rachel Zerowin of the Breckenridge Resort Chamber a couple of questions, including which event was her favorite, and which events were free.
“For 2013, I’m most excited about August. The new dates for Breck Bike Week (Aug. 15-18) sit between the USA Pro Cycling Challenge (in Breckenridge Aug. 20-21) and the Breck Epic (Aug. 11-16),” Zerowin said. “We’ll be seeing the best of professional road and mountain athletes, not to mention a chance for anyone to participate in the community events during Bike Week. Spectating is free at all three events. Some activities (such as demos) are free, while others are a suggested donation or include a small entry fee.”
- Kingdom Days
The first busy weekend in Breckenridge kicks off with a summer market, concerts from the National Repertory Orchestra, Outhouse Races, and the opening of the Breckenridge Summer Fun Park, accessible via the Breck Connect Gondola, on June 14 – 16.
- 4th of July
The town’s annual parade kicks off with mountain bike racers starting a 50 mile journey in the Firecracker 50. Before the parade, runners compete in the Independence Day 10K Trail Race. Cool off from all that activity at an old-fashioned water fight with the Fire Department, an art festival, and a free concert at the Riverwalk.
- Breckenridge Beer Festival
Sample tasty microbrews like the Oatmeal Stout, or the Vanilla Porter from the Breckenridge Brewery and a bevy of other breweries on July 13.
- U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge
Experience the atmosphere of professional cycling as racers head to Breck to finish of Stage 2 of America’s biggest cycling event on August 20 and then start Stage 3 on August 21. With start and finish events this year, Breck is the best place to be based out of to catch all the action.
- Breckenridge PRCA Pro Rodeo
Cowboys and cowgirls perform bareback riding, team roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing in Breck’s claim to country — the rodeo. This mountain rodeo entertains throughout the summer on Saturday and Sunday evenings going from June 22 to September 1.
- Mountain Art Festivals
You’ll have three opportunities to view original works of art and spend time getting to know the artists during the 30th Annual July Art Festival at Main Street Station July 5 – 7, the 12th Annual Main Street Art Festival July 26 – 28, and the 38th Annual Gathering of the Great Divide Art Festival August – September 2.
- Breck Bike Week
Bike demos, group rides, and even a bike concierge map out self-guided loops August 15 – 18. Bike vendors are also on hand to show off their goods and competitions, fun rides, and bike classes are also available for the Breck Bike enthusiast.
- Festival of Film
Watch independent films and meet the filmmakers September 19 – 22. With the Speakeasy closed for renovations, this may be your only chance to see award-winning cinema in Breck.
- Labor Day
Watch the rubber duckies race down the Blue River, as runners finish the Crest Mountain Marathon before heading over to the wine festival August 31 – September 2.
Main street Breckenridge shuts down for food with friends and family, steins filled with cold beer and polka music to dance to September 13 – 15. The region’s largest Oktoberfest, this event is every local’s favorite and a great way to send off summer.
